Steve Russell
Steve is a freelance photographer with over 20 years experience. Based in the Cotswolds in a fully equipped, drive-in studio with its own gallery space. His work has been published internationally and encompasses a wide variety of styles from sculpture and fine art to portraiture and interiors. Steve also travels, often abroad with commissions to places as diverse as Uganda and New York.
Steve has been photographing sculpture since the mid 1990's and includes the books Mud Fire Metal, Jonathan Kenworthy Sculpture and Works on Paper and Social, Savage, Sensual The Sculpture of Ralph Brown. Lynn Chadwick Out of the Shadows and Alan Cotton, Giving Life a Shape.
Recent commissions range from the Duke & Duchess of Westminster to the Ruwenzuri Sculpture Foundation, photographing Ugandan and British musicians on a remote island in Lake Victoria.
Steve's work with Pangolin Editions has led to new and exciting photographic images that combine sculpture and photography. Christened 'Photines', these photographic images on patinated bronze, hark back to the earliest techniques of photography. Having commissioned specific colours on plates of bronze, Steve then 'fits' a photograph to the patina, sensitises the plate with a liquid silver emulsion and develops the photograph directly onto the plate. More alchemy than science, the process often fails but when successful, produces a wonderful amalgam image, process, colour and character.
The latest showing of work will be at Pangolin London in King's Place, London during December, although you can see his work closer to home as Steve is holding an Open Day at his studio on Saturday 11th December. Click on the link to his web-site for further details.
