Term Definition
Gesso

Gesso was traditionally mixed with animal glue, usually rabbit-skin glue, to use as an absorbent primer coat for panel painting with tempera paints. It is a permanent and brilliant white substrate, as long as it is used on wood or masonite. Gesso is the base onto which gold leaf (gilding) is applied. It can be carved and moulded enabling it to be used to make decorative frame mouldings.

Giclee

A term used to describe a digital print made on an ultra-high resolution inkjet printer. The name comes from the French word 'gicleur' which is a word that describes an individual who squirts liquid through a nozzle.

Gilding

Process of applying a thin layer of real or imitation gold to a surface of gesso and bole.

Technical info:

  • Reduces reflection by over 85% (to less than 1% of total light), the lowest possible reflection rating available with UV protection
  • Provides the highest brightness and contrast levels available
  • Optimal clarity for true color transmission
  • Greatest color neutrality
  • Protect works of art against 99% of harmful indoor and outdoor UV light rays

When to use:

  • Any artwork that would benefit from reflection-free viewing with UV protection
  • Shadow boxes, multiple mat, or deep framing projects
Glass (Reflection Control)

Technical info:

  • Finished on only one side to provide the best resolution and clarity without distortion while reducing glare
  • Provides glare-free enjoyment without UV protection

When to use:

  • Can be used with up to two mats away from artwork without significant resolution loss
Gouache

The technique of applying opaque watercolour to paper; also a work of art so produced. The usual gouache painting displays a light-reflecting brilliance quite different from the luminosity of transparent watercolours.

Gum Arabic

A naturally occuring substance from two specific species of African Acacia tree used as a binder for watercolour painting.
